How Luis Enrique Transformed PSG into Champions League Winners

From Galacticos to Glory: How Luis Enrique Transformed PSG into Champions League Winners

PSG’s head coach Luis Enrique celebrates with the trophy after the Champions League final soccer match between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, Saturday, May 31, 2025.

The Spanish coach  or perhaps better described as an architect or a visionary  masterminded a 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in Saturday’s Champions League final. The match was so ruthlessly one-sided that it resembled a training session against a lower-tier side, not a clash with a three-time European Cup winner.

Passing, movement, energy.

Tireless pressing, forwards tracking back, wingers shielding their fullbacks.

Was this really PSG? Yes.

All of those traits were on full display in Munich, where Luis Enrique etched his name into an elite club of coaches who have won the Champions League with multiple clubs. His previous success came a decade ago with Barcelona in 2015  a 3-1 victory over Juventus  but this one felt more profound.

“This is the time for a great party and to make the most of this moment,” Luis Enrique said. “I felt this connection with the players and the fans, I think it was a very strong connection throughout the season.”

Before Luis Enrique’s arrival last summer, such cohesion and selflessness were anything but synonymous with PSG. The club was long known for glamour, ego, and dysfunction.

Over the years, the team was stacked with superstar names  Neymar, Thiago Silva, Lionel Messi, Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Kylian Mbappé.

All world-class. All trophy magnets. Yet, none could deliver the Champions League. Frustration grew, and with it came a carousel of head coaches, none able to solve the puzzle.

When Luis Enrique took charge, he turned the club’s philosophy on its head. Gone was the obsession with individual brilliance. More importantly, it wasn’t about who he bought  but who he let go.

Neymar and Marco Verratti were among the first to leave. Both dazzling talents, both often in the headlines for the wrong reasons  nightlife, off-field antics, and a lack of discipline. Then came the ultimate shock: Kylian Mbappé, PSG’s all-time leading scorer, joined Real Madrid.

The question on everyone’s lips: How would PSG survive without its biggest star?

The answer? Quite well  though the transformation took time, conviction, and a few setbacks.

So, what were the turning points of PSG’s season?

It started on a rainy night in London. Ousmane Dembélé was dropped by Luis Enrique as PSG suffered a lifeless 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League.

Luis Enrique made it clear: commitment was not optional. Dembélé was benched to send a message.

Pundits criticized the move. Many wondered if Enrique was repeating the mistakes of his predecessors. But rather than complain or seek a transfer, Dembélé stayed quiet. And by winter, he was reborn  a dangerous, efficient forward now being mentioned in Ballon d’Or discussions.

The other major turning point came on January 22.

PSG was staring down early elimination from the Champions League. They were at home against defending champions Manchester City and trailed 2-0. With no Mbappé to rescue them, the season looked set to collapse.

Instead, the opposite happened.

PSG’s young core ignited a comeback for the ages. Four different scorers flipped the script and secured a 4-2 win. No heroics from a single star  but a collective roar from the next generation.

From that point, the team never looked back. Their rejuvenated squad surged forward, adding the Champions League crown to their French league and cup titles  completing a historic treble, just as Luis Enrique did with Barcelona in 2015.

In the final, the star was 19-year-old Désiré Doué. He assisted the opening goal and then netted twice himself. Just like against City, PSG had four different scorers  a hallmark of this new era.

The final goal? Scored by 19-year-old Senny Mayulu, a homegrown gem from the northeastern Paris suburb of Le Blanc-Mesnil.

In memory of his daughter
Luis Enrique’s daughter, Xana, passed away six years ago at age nine. After the match, when asked about her by Canal Plus, Luis Enrique gently tapped his chest.

“It’s here every day of my life, whether we win or lose,” he said.

As the celebrations roared, PSG fans unveiled a banner with Xana’s name. Luis Enrique changed into a shirt honoring the foundation he created in her memory.

A club once defined by individualism had finally become a team united, relentless, and, at last, European champions.
